Senior Health and Wellness Spotlight

Meet one of our BakerRipley Senior Health and Wellness program participants, Cynthia Simson. Cynthia is a retired librarian and teacher who has dedicated her 43-year career to education, teaching in countries all over the world. Cynthia is an avid swimmer and visits the BakerRipley Bay Area Senior Center every morning after her swim. She enjoys breakfast, reading, and engaging with other seniors at the center. She also loves participating in field trips, and especially enjoyed the trip to Blue Bell Creamery and the San Jacinto Museum and Battlefield. Cynthia is just one of many Houston-area seniors whose lives are enriched with joy and hope thanks to BakerRipley. Through our comprehensive programs, we strive to create vibrant communities where seniors can thrive, stay active, and build lasting friendships.

Weatherization Spotlight

Jade Thomas was at a loss. Inadequate air conditioning in her home was causing her electric bill to skyrocket, and she struggled to pay each month. But hope was on the way. Upon applying for the BakerRipley Utility Assistance Program to help pay her electric bill, Jade was also considered for BakerRipley’s Weatherization Program. As a result, her home received a new air conditioning system, attic insulation, and sealed windows and doors at no cost. Following these home improvements, Jade’s electric bill decreased from $300-400 to $81. “I couldn’t believe the difference. We can now be comfortable at home,” Jade said. “The BakerRipley Weatherization Program has been a godsend and a blessing.” BakerRipley’s focus on comprehensive support meant not only assisting Jade with her electric bills, but also addressing the underlying issues that caused her bills to be so high. This approach provided a long-term solution for her family’s well-being and financial stability.

Immigration and Citizenship Spotlight

BakerRipley’s Immigration & Citizenship Program recently reached a significant milestone with the implementation of the Case Management Pilot Program (CMPP), a federally funded initiative that offers comprehensive support to immigrants. This program provides case management, pro se legal assistance, housing, and mental health services. Over the past year, more than 400 individuals have enrolled and are currently receiving these vital services. Notably, BakerRipley was among the first organizations nationwide to receive this grant and is the sole CMPP provider in the southern United States. This achievement underscores BakerRipley’s leadership and commitment to serving immigrant communities with holistic, impactful solutions.
